Why it's called "Blink" is a mystery to us. These won't make you blink, but you might flinch when you see a pair of these. These are full blown combat sunglasses that look good too. The picture doesn't really do a good job of showing off the color of this frame. The folks at Wiley X call it Metallic Black, but to us it looks more like a very dark metallic gray when in the sunlight. The metallic specs are very small which lightens the black polymer. They look too good to be combat military eyewear! SPECIFICATIONS: The Blink is aerodynamically designed to cut through dust and wind, with or without the removable gasket. The gasket is removable like the other models in the climate control series. It's wrap back design (the folks at Wiley X call it an "extended orbital design") allows for superior peripheral vision. It has neoprene ear socks (temple ends), which allow a full grip regardless of perspiration levels. This model is designed to fit average head sizes comfortably, and if you have a large head size and prefer a solid but comfortable fit, these will work well for you as well. The Blink exceeds ANSI Z87.1-2003 industrial impact standards as well as MIL PRF high velocity military impact standards. All Wiley X models feature full UVA/UVB ultra-violet protection. This version includes the newest 4th generation photogrey lens technology (Auto-Light Adjusting). If you've owned photogreys, also called transitional lenses, in the past, you were probably disappointed with their performance. They would generally only darken to a very light gray. These darken faster and deeper than any photogrey lenses of the past. And, they clear to almost crystal clear much faster than before. In fact, when fully clear in a room or at night they transmit at least 85% of light. Plain clear lenses transmit 89% of light. So the difference between clear and Auto-Light Adjusting at night or inside is insignificant. When in full sunlight, they transmit 17% of light, which is better performance than some tinted lenses. These lenses perform like no other Light Adjusting lenses on the market. To put it into perspective, on a scale of 1 to 5 with 1 being clear and 5 being traditional dark tinted lenses, we rate the darkness somwhere close to 4.0. The 3rd generation we rate on our scale at between 2.5 to 3.0. This is a significant improvement. Just a note about photogrey technology. Photogrey lenses will not darken to their full strength while in a vehicle. To darken they must be exposed to sunlight (ultra-violet rays) which activates the darkening process. If you need standard tint lenses for driving, we generally don't recommend photogrey lenses. Also, a lot of people will place them in the sun behind a window of a car or their house to "test" how well they work. Windows block most ultra-violet rays so they will not darken. Otherwise, if you spend a lot of time outdoors, are in and out of buildings all day, or ride motorcycles (without a shield), these are great for 24 hour use. That's why military personnel love auto-light adjusting lenses. There are no extra lenses to swap out or carry around which are subject to damage and they work very well in desert environments regardless of weather conditions. If you really want a pair of Blinks, this version won't freak out the First Sergeant or Sergeant Major in morning formation like the aluminum gloss 555 Model will. If you're a 2LT, trust us on this. It just isn't worth the aggravation, unless of course your day isn't complete until you've raised Top's blood pressure 20 points. Then get the Model 555 gloss aluminum with mirrored lenses.
